Experience
I came to education in a roundabout way when I moved to Iowa for a few years. While I was there I took a job as a biology lab instructor at Drake University; before that time, my only experience teaching was as a teaching assistant through graduate school. I found the environment fun and challenging. I loved practicing the inquiry based method of teaching, using examples in nature to help students think critically and see that biology and all science is a process and not a simple accumulation of facts. My experience teaching involves basic biology, with a greater depth of knowledge in ecology, biostatistics, experimental design, and scientific writing specifically. My graduate school education included classes on these topics, and I was later able to successfully integrate these into my teaching labs.

Hobbies
I take a lot of inspiration from the outdoors, and most of my hobbies center around that theme. Hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, fishing, canoeing, mushroom hunting, cross country skiing are just some of the activities I do on a regular basis. I think it's always been a great way for me to enjoy exercise and see biology in action at the same time. When the weather gets me down, I like to cook and read as well.
